Verde Nigeria & JV Partner PW Nigeria awarded 250,000m2 Tier 2 Assessment Contract in Ogoniland
27 February 2020
PW Nigeria and Verde Nigeria signed a contract for the award of a 250,000m2 Tier 2 Assessment of Gio-B-Dere (Tai) and Baraalue (Tai) in Ogoniland, Rivers State. This will give us a good indication of the conditions on the ground and a real insight into the levels of hydrocarbon contamination present in both soil and groundwater and the challenges we will face in undertaking the remediation works in the area.
Background
With our joint venture partners, PW Nigeria, Verde continue to pursue remediation projects from HYPREP (Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project) in Ogoniland – what would be the biggest oil clean-up exercise the world’s ever seen.
The story of the clean-up of Ogoniland has been a long drawn out process from the survey and environmental report produced by the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) in 2010 to the commencement of small remediation projects in 2019. Verde and PW have been working hard to secure a large scale remediation project in the region and continue to lobby the Board of Trustees and the Minister for Environment in this regard.
