Upgrade to 12 Waste Water Treatment Plants across North Cork

North Cork Fine Gael Councillor John Paul O’Shea has this week welcomed funding of over €835,000 from Irish Water to facilitate upgrading works to 12 Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTP’s) across North Cork.  More than €650,000 has been allocated by Irish Water for upgrades to both the Kanturk and Charleville WWTP’s alone.

In Kanturk, Irish Water has announced it will oversee an upgrade of the aeration system, foul pumping works and the chemical dosing arrangement within the Town’s Waste Water Treatment Plant as well as important safety measures including the replacement of decking, provision of handrailings and the retrofitting of kick plates to various tanks.

In Charleville, upgrades to the aeration system and associated works have been announced, as well as the replacement of manhole covers on Kilmallock Road, the provision of handrailings, and the retrofitting of kick plates to various tanks and associated works.

The funds have been allocated through Irish Water’s Wastewater Minor Capital Works Programme. Cllr. O’Shea, this week said he welcomed the provision of funding for these two projects, as well as funding for a host of minor works to 11 other WWTP’s across North Cork.  €70,000 has been allocated by Irish Water to replace inlet screens at both Dromahane WWTP and Freemount WWTP. Additionally at Dromahane WWTP, €2,656 has been allocated for other minor works. €12,495 has been allocated for upgrades to Ballydesmond WTTP, to supply and install a replacement kiosk for plant controls and associated works.  Elsewhere, €15,000 has been allocated for upgrade works at Knockagree WWTP, €15,545 has been allocated for works at Milford WWTP & Pump Station, €4,200 at Cullen WWTP, €2,500 at Rockchapel WWTP, €4,000 at Churchtown Pump Station, €4,313 at Dromina WWTP, and €5,448 at Newtownshandrum WWTP.

Commenting of the allocations, Cllr O’Shea said: “It’s important that Irish Water is working to maintain and upgrade our Wastewater Treatment Plants and the recent funding allocations for across North Cork are certainly welcome. The importance of our treatment plants can’t be overestimated and the need for investment in water services nationally is very apparent, so the fact that more than €835,000 has been allocated for these projects is a positive move.”
